Modern and Contemporary Photography
Since 1998, Grisebach has sold selected photographic prints at auction, including important works from the history of photography and art photography. The spectrum of works offered twice annually in the auction “Modern and Contemporary Photographs” ranges from the innovations of the 19th and early 20th centuries to modern photography, including works by artists ranging from Karl Blossfeldt, Man Ray, August Sander, Edward Steichen, and Edward Weston to contemporary works of international artists such as Bernd and Hilla Becher, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Cindy Sherman, and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Special emphasis is placed on Bauhaus photography and the photography of the “New Vision” and New Objectivity movements. The artistic value of the photographs selected for the auction and the high quality of the individual prints as collector’s objects are valued by a large clientele that includes photography connoisseurs from across the world. This is consistently reflected in the high, often record-setting, prices at auction and the large number of works sold.
