We are fascinated by the modernity and vitality of the 19th century.
Our focus is on the art of Romanticism. This season, we are delighted to present a remarkable Dresden private collection with works by Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus and Johan Christian Dahl: Masterpieces of Romanticism.
In addition, we focus on the freshness and immediacy of oil studies that sharpen the eye for modernity, with wonderful works by Rottmann, Isabey, Gudin, Gurlitt and many others.
Mostly created in oil on paper in nature, they complement our outstanding selection of master drawings: from Friedrich to Gericault (rare study for the ‘Raft of the Medusa’), from Delacroix to Dillis (clouds on blue laid paper), from Millet to Menzel, Vuillard and Liebermann, which enter into a stimulating dialogue with extremely rare old master designs by Pontormo, Koninck and Perino des Vaga.
Rediscoveries such as the early portrait of Queen Louise by Friedrich Georg Weitsch are always a source of great pleasure. We contrast these with the individual, often symbolist expressions of the fin-de-siècle, whose quality and pictorial inventions are hardly surprising, from the Dresden circle with Sascha Schneider and Max Pietschmann, whose studio we cordially invite you to explore.
Our selection would like to welcome you to an exciting journey of discovery through the worlds of art on the way to modernity, to broaden your view, to be inspired by extraordinary achievements and – as the Humboldt Brothers and Goethe so urgently recommended – to bring art into life in order to enrich life itself.
