Thomas Demand is known for photographs of elaborately staged model sets, which he reconstructs from media images using paper and cardboard. Once the photograph has been taken, the models are immediately destroyed. In this way, he achieves a unique visual analysis of images that shape our everyday culture.
The work Gate shows the security checkpoint at Logan International Airport in Boston, which the terrorist Mohammed Atta passed through unhindered on the morning of September 11, 2001. Numerous photographs of the attacks exist, which have since been repeatedly reproduced and have become indelibly inscribed in our collective visual memory. The pixelated image of a security checkpoint that the attacker had just passed, although widely published, is not usually among them.
Demand takes up a quiet, inconspicuous motif that at first glance does not immediately evoke associations with 9/11, yet reveals a decisive moment in which the catastrophe became possible. Twenty-five years on, only few will still remember this specific image. Demand’s works are therefore always also a play with our memories and with the question of how we interpret images in the context of our own experiences.
Another print of Gate has already been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; another example is in the collection of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
