Take a great band, for example: It’s how the members’ differing personalities join together that creates its irresistible sound. At Grisebach, we have four partners, four strong characters, who brainstorm visions and ideas in their daily discussions, creating a fruitful dynamic that constantly recharges and balances their individual points of view. Only if every one of them contributes his or her experiences, expertise, nuances, and character traits will their varying vantage points meld into the proverbial something that is greater than the sum of its parts.
It is precisely this approach that makes what we do more meaningful and effective and, above all, that allows us to work with others on a personal and intimate level. Call it polyphonic harmony. It opens spaces for new points of view – on art, on collections, on potentials yet unseen.
In this issue, we invite you to get even better acquainted with Grisebach’s signature sound by giving you a look into the private spaces of our partners, showing you how art can intertwine with daily life.
This space that art and its history opens up is given concrete form in the portraits created by photographer Matthias Schaller of the colour palettes used by a selection of well-known painters. Then, we take you to the Hamburg home of the collector Christoph H. Seibt, a renowned commercial lawyer. And we travel on to New York to pay a visit to the architect Annabelle Selldorf and her projects for some of the world’s most important institutions and galleries. In essence, this issue is about the spirit of collaboration that art enables, about living with art, about the people behind it and their stories.
A look back at our spring auctions confirms that demand for outstanding, fresh to the market works of 20th and 21st century art remains unabated, especially on the international level. Our network, our expertise, the trust placed in us – all this has allowed us to achieve remarkable results despite all the global uncertainties. One particular highlight, and the season’s top lot, was Lyonel Feininger's painting Vollersroda III, which will be going on permanent loan to the Henie Onstad Art Center in Oslo, Norway.
At the same time, we are already looking ahead: the winter auctions are taking shape with the first exciting highlights. So our quartet will continue to play together under the leadership of frontman Daniel von Schacky. Would you like to contribute to this unmistakable Grisebach sound with your consignments? We look forward to hearing from you!
