The young German architect Paul Grotz immigrated to the United States in 1928. In New York he shared not only his apartment with the photographer Walker Evans, but also his enthusiasm for photography. Together they explored modern architecture with their cameras like for example the Chrysler Building seen from the roof of the nearby Chanin Building.

The present prints have been laid down on carboard and titled on the reverse by the artist himself.

In the late 1980s exhibitions of the early photographs in the Prakapas photogallery, New York and the Lehigh University Art Galleries, Bethlehem Pennsylvania. Acquired by the Museum of Modern Art.

In c. 1930 Walker Evans created a portrait photograph of his friend (see lot 2046)
