Oil on paper on cardboard. 50,5 x 66 cm (19 ⅞ x 26 in.). Signed and dated lower right: DIX 1913. Titled in pencil on the reverse upper left: Sonnenaufgang. Below this in pencil (crosswise) the EK Inv. no. 16158 and the handwritten property notation: Borst. In addition, stamp and inventory inscription of the Dresdner Stadtmuseum as well as labels of the exhibitions Los Angeles 1991 and London 1992 (see below). Catalogue raisonné: Löffler 1913/25 („Untergehende Sonne über Winterlandschaft“). Upper left corner repaired probably by the artist. Minor retouchings. Framed

PLEASE NOTE: At the request of the Stadtmuseum Dresden, Kulturstiftung der Laender and the current owner, Villa Grisebach is pleased to announce the waiving of the sale of the painting "Sonnenaufgang" by Otto Dix (Auction "Selected Works" on 29 November 2012, lot 7). Regarding the painting's history: "Sonnenaufgang" was received by the Stadtmuseum Dresden as a gift from Otto Dix. In 1937 the work was seized by the Nazis and included in the propaganda show "Degenerate Art" in Munich. We join the owner in his joy of seeing the painting return to the Stadtmuseum as the place of display intended by the artist over 75 years ago. From January 2013 it will be exhibited at the Museum in Dresden at the old spot..
