Information

Oil on oak. 21 x 15,6 cm (8 ¼ x 6 ⅛ in.). On the reverse a seal with a coat of arms under a Count's coronet / remains of a French newspaper / in blue coloured pencil: 898, 8754, remainder illegible. Catalogue raisonné: Accompanied by a certificate by Max J. Friedländer, Berlin, dated 18 June 1932, where described as Brakenburgh (in the original). Framed

Comparable work: a similar (formerly signed) plate, 26,5 x 21,8 cm, by his nephew Hendrick de Valk (1674–1709), ex J. Paul Getty Museum Collection, Los Angeles, in: Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 4 September 2007, lot 14, as: "An unequal couple in an inn, with an old woman looking around the corner".
