Autumn Auctions 247-254

19th Century Art, Wednesday, 25.11.2015

Information

Pencil on paper. 16,5 × 27 cm (6 ½ × 10 ⅝ in.). Inscribed in pencil on the reverse: Carl Hummel. On the reverse a pencil sketch of trees. Slightly creased, minor imperfections in the margins.

It seems this sheet was executed on the same day as another work inscribed by Hummel which appeared for sale at Villa Grisebach in November 2011 (Auction 187, lot 117). This previously-auctioned work is now in the graphics collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Via his elimination of tonal shading on certain of the treetrunks, Hummel provides both works with a similar sense of dynamism..
