Information

Box of lenses with sliding top pane. Wooden box, optical lenses, wooden balls, glass, ink. 22,2 × 35,5 × 12,5 cm (8 ¾ × 14 × 4 ⅞ in.). On the reverse: drawing. Enclosure: exhibition catalogue. Mary Bauermeister. The New York Decade. Northampton, Massachusetts, Smith College Museum of Art, 2015. With drawing on the first page. Framed

The work was created in multiple phases: The subject relates to the 1964 drawing, "needless needles," today in the collection of MoMA, New York; in 1971-72 the balls were added and the box was built; in 1991 the top sliding pane was installed; repairs were made by the artist in 2016.
