Information

Oil on paper on cardboard. 7 × 10,7 cm (8,6 × 12,4 cm) (2 ¾ × 4 ¼ in. (3 ⅜ × 4 ⅞ in.)). Inscribed in pencil (by the artist?) below the image: bei Civitella. Inscribed on the reverse in pen and violet ink and in pencil: bei Civitella. über Olevano.

The source of the trimmed size of the three oil studies by Schilbach as well as the inscriptions on their reverse is the artist's son-in-law. After the artist's death he set out to re-work Schilbach's oil studies "in a pictorial manner." In this regard, in Lot 104 the brown area in the lower right might have been painted by him.

We would like to thank Dr. Peter Märker, Berlin, for kindly providing this information..
