Information

Limewood, carved, gilt. 98 × 186 × 45 cm (38 ⅝ × 73 ¼ × 17 ¾ in.).

The eagle is said to originate from Schloss Schlobitten in East Prussia. An identically large and similarly moulded, carved eagle can be seen on the frame of the official portrait of Frederick I by Samuel Theodor Gericke from 1701 in the blue room (published in: Carl Grommelt and Christine von Mertens: Das Dohnasche Schloß Schlobitten in Ostpreußen. Stuttgart, 1962, ill. 72, p. 149).

Comparable objects: Three-dimensional stucco eagle of similar shape as arcade finial of the chapel in Schloss Charlottenburg, 1704.

Private Collection, Berlin (acquired in 1990s in the Berlin art dealership)
