Information

Oil on canvas. 71 × 58 cm (28 × 22 ⅞ in.). Signed and dated in black felt-tip pen on the reverse: Markus 2005. In artist's frame

Markus Schinwald devotes his work to paintings from the past. He reinvents them without completely defamiliarizing them. He finds or buys paintings, mostly portraits from the 19th Century, and partially paints over them and adds new attributes to the subjects. This work by Schinwald is an overpainting on a portrait of a woman by an unknown artist, dated 1893..

Private Collection, Rhineland
