About the Event

Artists Janine Mackenroth and Bianca Kennedy have published I Love Women in Art, the first anthology about women artists in Germany. The reason was as simple as it was surprising: Until then, there had been no book that told the story of women artists in Germany in this way.

Six years later, I Love Women in Art was published in English for the first time, opening the project up to an international audience.

About the Authors

Bianca Kennedy (born in Leipzig in 1989) lives and works in Berlin. She uses various media – including animation, video, virtual reality, found footage, and drawing – to explore everyday relationships and routines, reflecting on human behavior, social norms, and expectations. Through her work, she reveals conflicts that exist within power dynamics and identity politics and how they intersect with categories such as class, gender, privacy, and public space.

Kennedy has exhibited internationally in museums and at festivals, including Gropius Bau (2023), SCAD Museum of Art (2021), Krinzinger Schottenfeld Vienna (2024), Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig (2020), CCBB Rio de Janeiro (2019), and the Sundance Film Festival (2020). She is the recipient of the 2018 LOOP Discover Award and won the 2019 TOY Berlin Masters Prize.

Janine Mackenroth (born in 1989) explores themes of equality and sustainability. Using plant-based (nail) polish, she creates paintings that challenge traditional gender roles as well as the materiality of art itself. Starting with the development of biodegradable paint for her public installations on environmental themes, she shifted in 2015 to materials such as nail polish and makeup – a move that can also be understood as a commentary on an art world that remains male-dominated. Plant-based nail polish of her own making – currently in the colors of EURO banknotes –shredded paper from the Deutsche Bundesbank, and plastic waste are her current materials. Mackenroth transforms icons, alters their form and function, and reworks them into building blocks for a new and, if possible, better and more sustainable world.

Her works are currently on view at the Bundeskunsthalle and in the collection of the German Bundestag. Since 2021, the artist has been conducting research – with funding from the Federal Ministry – on her innovation for sustainable paints. In 2023, she was commissioned by the EU as an artist for the New European Bauhaus project. She is the recipient of the first Ceu Art Award (2023) and a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
