The first version of the motif „Erscheinung im Walde“ of 1823 in sepia ink (35 x 47 cm) was executed during Schwind's time in Vienna and, through the bequest of the Wolfgang Ratjen Collection, recently entered the National Gallery in Washington. (German Master Drawings from the Wolfgang Ratjen Collection, 1580-1900, Washington 2010, no. 62 (Hinrich Sieveking), pp.182)..
