Chalk on paper (from a sketch book). 38,1 × 31 cm (15 × 12 ¼ in.).

Estate of the artist / Private Collection, Berlin (until 2010) This drawing was one of a selection of works on paper by George Grosz which was found in a box in the cellar of Grosz's former Berlin home by his grandniece in the 1980s. 24 portrait sketches of Max Hermann-Neiße were found in this bundle of papers, 23 of which are currently in the possession of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. This portrait, which the finder kept as a gift from Peter Grosz, the artist's son, is the last of the group to have remained in private hands.
