Information

Pencil, black and white crayon on 29 (of 30) sheets of white, brown and green paper. Dimensions of the book: 11,2 x 18,5 cm (4 ⅜ x 7 ¼ in.). Catalogue raisonné: Accompanied by a confirmation by Prof. Dr. Hans Joachim Neidhardt, Dresden, dated 10 November 2000. – The sketchbook will be included in the Carl Gustav Carus catalogue raisonné by Dirk Gedlich, Dresden (in preparation). Original card binding with a label of the Kunsthandlung Emil Geller, Dresden, Waisenhausstr. 32.

The sketchbook exclusively contains sheets with motifs from the environs of Dresden and Saxon Switzerland. It begins with a landscape with a rainbow, inscribed with notes about the colours and dated „16/4 61“. Studies of animals (eagles, vultures, deer) and landscapes follow. Notable by virtue of their very full composition View over the Elbe „bei Mockritz, d. 27/6 62“ and the view from behind of a girl kneeling outside before a furnace („Pillnitz d. 5/7 63“) where Carus uses a little red crayon for the luminous fire. One sheet shows the sculpture of a hunter on the staircase at Moritzburg Castle. In between very free landscape studies of the meadows along the river Elbe are found. The last dated drawing from 11.8.1863 shows a group of houses in Freiberg..
