Information

Oil on cardboard. 49,5 × 75 cm (19 ½ × 29 ½ in.). Signed lower left: M Liebermann. Inscribed in pencil on the reverse: Die Neunte Symphonie, von Strauß[!] dirigirt März 1920 Max Liebermann. Catalogue raisonné: Catalogue raisonné: Eberle 1919/1 [!] ("location unknown"). Accompanied by a certificate by Prof. Dr. Matthias Eberle, Berlin, dated 17. October 2017. Framed

Heinrich Stahl, Berlin-Dahlem (1926) / Jenny Stahl, wife of Heinrich Stahl, Berlin/New York / Irving Kaufman (New York?) / Ray Kaufman (New York?) (1950 received as a gift of her husband Irving Kaufman, thence by descent to the present owner)

Prof. Dr. Matthias Eberle assumes that the man front left is a self portrait of Liebermann: "Liebermann who repeatedly wanted to listen to Beethoven's Ninth could be depicting himself as the man front left who seems to be lost in the music." (from the certificate by Prof. Dr. Matthisa Eberle, Berlin, 17/10/2017)
