The son and pupil of the well-known architectural and landscape painter Johann Erdmann Hummel (1769-1852) took part in the Oriental War (1853-1856) as an officer in Russian service and recorded his visual impressions of military life in paintings. The artist takes the viewer into an episode at the front and shows the detailed interior of his quarters. On the right, his roommate in oriental costume reclines; on the wall above him hangs an official note with a decree of quarantine. On the luggage on the left, the artist's signature is hidden on a label, signalling his longing to be released again into the freedom of the vast landscape. LJM
