About the exhibition
Artworks have always adorned the hallways and offices of Schering AG and later Bayer AG in Berlin. Many of these works were part of the Schering Stiftung art collection and will be on sale at Grisebach from February 10 to March 11. We warmly invite you to this last opportunity to view the collection in its entirety and to discover works by West Berlin artists from the 1960s through the 1990s.
Schering AG saw it as an important task to support the cultural and artistic life of Berlin, especially West Berlin, during the years when Germany was divided. Through regular exhibitions organized by the "Schering Kunstverein," thematic hangings in the corridors and meeting rooms of the company’s office buildings, and a steadily growing picture-lending library (Artothek), the company made an important contribution to the city's art scene.
The development of the art collection came to an end in 2006, when Schering AG was acquired by Bayer AG. The works were integrated into the Bayer Artothek and could be borrowed by employees.
The decision to part with this legacy was not an easy one. However, the Schering Stiftung from its founding has focused its activities on promoting pioneering work in the sciences and arts, and so the proceeds from the sale are to go towards new, innovative projects that will benefit Berlin's art scene today.
Several high-priced works have already been sold during the Winter Auction. The works shown in the current exhibition are mostly priced at under EUR 3,000, a very low price segment in today’s art market. Stop by to look and browse – the festive exhibition opening will take place on February 9 at Fasanenstrasse 27 in Berlin-Charlottenburg!
