About the auction

Grisebach is honoured to bring to auction 31 selected works on paper from the private collection of Rudolf Zwirner, one of the most important and trend-setting gallery owners of the 20th century. From Rembrandt van Rijn to Raymond Pettibon, this curated selection testifies to Zwirner‘s refined sense for exceptional quality and his keen eye for beauty. He did not follow a fixed concept, however: “It wasn´t about searching, just finding” according to Rudolf Zwirner.

Leading the sale are the light gouache “L’Enlèvement de Psyché“ by Pierre-Paul Prud’hon (estimate EUR 200,000/300,000), a preliminary study created around 1808 for the painting with the same name in the Louvre, as well as the almost abstract image “Carnet Guernesey“ by the great French novelist Victor Hugo from 1856 (estimate EUR 100,000/150,000).
